What Does This Say About Canada? (It Can't Be Anything Good)

So, Christie Belchforth writes for the National Post. Perhaps their worst columnist? Another reason that newspaper is failing? But Belchforth used to write for the Globe and Mail. Of course, Margaret ('s brain) Wente writes for that newspaper. And she's perhaps their worst columnist. (She's in the top 3 worst for sure.) And then there's the Liberal Toronto Star. And their worst columnist is by far Rosie DiMoron.

Christie Belchforth, Margaret's brain Wente, Rosie DiMoron.

What does it say about this country that these hideous idiots are such prominent writers?

What's going on that our male-dominated newspapers choose to have these abominations to represent women? Is it some sort of plot? Or do they like what they read and think: "Finally! A girl who GETS IT!" ?

No matter what, it doesn't say anything good about us.

Unfortunately Thwap, these "journalists" are saying what a great many Canadians think. It's really right in line with the kind of politicians were electing, at every level of government, same stripes, same bullshit. They have the open mic right now in this country, guys like you and me can forget having a voice, we don't.

BC Waterboy,

I've written a fair bit about this. Yeez kin check if'n you want too ...

But I believe that the "conservative" movement as presently constituted gets most of its hardcore support from the stupidest 20-30% of the general population.

There are greedheads who exploit these people for their own selfish purposes and there are borderline people who would turn our way if the could be shamed enough.

That sort of thing started to happen in the 1960s and 1970s, when a number of factors combined to produce the rise of feminism, anti-racism, anti-imperialism, and pro-worker mentalities.

There has been a deliberate and targeted counter-attack on all these areas by the capitalist class.

I don't believe that the majority embraces the racist filth of KKKate Makkkmillan's crowd, but getting the majority to clearly support leftist values will be difficult.

(Getting the formal politicians to abandon bullshit Liberalism or sell-out Social Democracy, represented by Michael Ignatieff, Paul Martin, Bob Rae and Roy Romanow, etc., ... will be an even harder struggle.)

Holly Stick left me this link yesterday : Unmasking the press

"The men who own the corporate press are fighting a class war, seeking, even now, to defend the 1% to which they belong against its challengers. But, because they control much of the conversation, we seldom see it in these terms. Our press reframes the major issues so effectively that it often recruits its readers to mobilise against their own interests."

I agree but lately have been surprised at the absolute shit-kicking G&M writers are taking in the "highest rated comments" under their articles when said articles are too sympathetic to righty agenda.
Informed, on point, scathing, and sometimes with good alternate news links.

Even poor old Lawrence Martin caught it when he wrote the Beyond the Border deal is really no biggie.

Admittedly a small reading sample on my part - probably 6 - but I don't recall this level of critique having been the case in the past.

Or perhaps they're all you ;-)

Alison,

They ain't never me. :)

I commented a few times a few years ago under my own name but forgot my password and couldn't be bothered to look for it again.

At the time I was depressed with the low level of commentary (racist, ignorant, off-topic and stupid) but you're right, lately our sort of people have decided to have at it with the con-men (and con-women like Wente!) and their drooling idiot fan-base. I've seen consistently good criticism of GnM bullshit since the paper endorsed harper.

That Monbiot link is a valuable read. By working so hard to debase society, big media has (unavoidably) debased itself even more.

good call. monbiot's usually got something worth reading. unlike the other scum mentioned in your post. thanks for calling them out once again.

on a side note, you should have a post with a reading list for the year/new year that fellow readers can add on to. i'm still keeping my eyes open for 'chartism' should i ever happen to come by a copy.

Huh. A reading list for the new year 'eh?

Well, maybe I'll do just that tomorrow. I'll include this one:

A Wicked Company:The Forgotten Radicalism of the European Enlightenment.

I just started it but I am quite liking it.

It's too bad that Canada has not yet produced a Maureen Dowd.

I'm not that big a fan of hers myself.
