Yves Engler on Canada's UN Humiliation

Yves Engler is one of the most principled and courageous activists against Canada's detestable, corporate-directed foreign policy today. Therefore, even while other things have pushed it off the news cycle, I thought it a good idea to present his comprehensive take on harper's failures and the way they've turned international foreign opinion against us.
In a harsh international rebuke Stephen Harper’s government lost its bid for a UN Security Council seat last week. The vote in New York was the world’s response to a Canadian foreign policy designed to please the most reactionary, shortsighted sectors of the Conservative Party’s base — evangelical Christian Zionists, extreme right-wing Jews, Islamophobes, the military-industrial-academic-complex, mining and oil executives and old cold-warriors.
There's plenty more. Check it out.

That article only increases my conviction that the only difference between how the U.S. and Canadian governments approach foreign policy is the size of the respective militaries under their command.

Pretty much. The Canadian and US business class is pretty close and its business that dictates most foreign policy.

I think the Liberals tried to preserve a little daylight between themselves and Canada's military-industrial and mining industries, but the harpercons are too stupid and vulgar for that.

Nice to hear from you again.

Most Canadians can't be bothered to inform themselves as to the true nature of Canada at home and abroad, no matter which side of the "con/lib" corporatist coin is running things.

The cozy myths and stupid cliches are much easier to cling to.

Youngfox,

You said it. I can't believe that people can't put the abstract concepts "Your tax dollars" and "torture" together in such a way as to act upon it.

Of course, if you say "your tax dollars" and "government waste" it resonates.

As if propping-up a corrupt, torturing government isn't a waste of their tax dollars.

Our political culture has become so debased in the past couple of decades. Good job Granatstein, Fraser Institute, Sun Media and assorted assholes!

The media doesn't even both identifying the "assorted assholes" as representing the views of the extreme right. No wonder they have made such traction when their views are being trotted out as expertise.

Beijing York,

Can't call it the extreme-right. There's only an extreme-left in this world.

Why, did you know that fascism is a leftist phenomenon.

They're deliberately fuzzying everything so that, yes, the political spectrum slides ever-rightward.
